Shmoe – 318 glyphs, 4 weights.
Irreverently bold cartoon style display based on Wally Wood’s lettering from the earliest issues of the comic series “MAD”.
After an initially successful yet highly controversial run of horror comics, including many unpleasant run-ins with the oppressively strict Comics Code Authority, E.C. Comics publisher William Gaines and editor Harvey Kurtzman created a new satirical humour comic series in 1954 they named MAD. Before evolving into a magazine, these books featured parodies of many popular comics, movies and TV shows of its day. It launched the careers of soon to be legendary illustrators, such as Kurtzman himself, Will Elder, Jack Davis, John Severin and Wally Wood. The title lettering of these panel layouts was a style developed by Wood who used it frequently throughout much of his prolific horror, sci-fi and crime comic book work.
This is a much improved reimagining of my earlier font called “Shermlock”. The new font’s name is derived from the story “G.I. Shmoe”, a wild parody of the Korean War, printed in the MAD #10. April 1954 issue.
