Bedevilled – 320 glyphs, 4 weights.
Fairly extended serif display based on a vintage ad campaign for “Underwood Deviled Ham”, circa 1905.
The William Underwood Company was formed by its namesake in 1822, and had a leading role in the development of canning and sterilization technologies. The company developed a large varying roster of products which it sold until it was acquired by Pet Inc. in 1982. Consequently, Pet Inc. was then purchased by the Pillsbury Company in 1995.
Underwood’s flagship product was a “Deviled” mélange of ground ham and various seasonings such as pepper sauce, cayenne pepper, chopped chili peppers and Dijon mustard. The demonic logo, meant to emphasize the product’s spiciness, was first trademarked in 1870 and slowly evolved into the friendlier red devil mascot by 1895. This popular meat spread is still sold today and has been copied by a multitude of companies who continue to offer their own versions.
